on chrysler V8s when the dots on the crank and cam sprocket are lined up the dist rotor will point to # 6 cyl. the factory book does not say ANYTHING about the dist, or its rotor. dont worry about anything BUT the dots lining up .

I'm a little confused by one thing in your post, did you take the distributer out or not? because from what i gather they are like chevy distributers they will either be right or 180 out if it is 180 out and you moved the wires accordingly then everything is fine, if you didn't then it probably wouldn't run at all basically as long as the rotor is sending the spark to the right cylinder at the right time your good to go.

just noticed... you said when you put your timing light on number 6..... which wire are you talking about... the wire which goes to the 2nd cylinder from the back on the passenger side, or what you think is number 6 because thats where you've moved the number 1 wire to?

You have to pull the distributor to replace the cam.
When you install timing set correctly engine will be at TDC for the # 6 cylinder.
So to get to TDC on #1 you have to turn the crank a full 360 degree's.
He didnt do that.
So when he install the distributor according to his manual, which he did do correcty, he had the distributor timed to #6 cylinder instead of #1.
Not knowing this he put the wires in their correct order with #1 wire where it should be according to his manual but timed to #6 cylinder which is 180 degree out of time.
So he had to move his plug #1 plug wire to where the number #6 would be and then from there route them clockwise according to the firing order.

This link shows it the way I was thinking things were on a dodge. which is the same as it is on a chevy smallblock dist

Op it honestly doesnt matter to the engine weather the dist shaft is in properly or 180 degrees out as long as you have moved the wires accordingly it's still firing the same cylinder at the same time and it wont hurt nothing.

Correct, it will not hurt anything the way he has it.
