Default 1979 D100 speedometer

Hi there, I know a 79 isn’t “technically” a ram but I wasn’t sure where to ask. On my truck, the speedometer has decided to just stop working right. It still sweeps fully, but it chatters really bad/loud above 30mph, bounces around at highway speed, and rests at 10mph when the truck is off and in park. Is this probably a cable, speedometer itself, or something else situation?

Edit: also, it just randomly started all this one day coming down the interstate.

Failing as replace the entire cable, or clean/lube the cable? Thank you.

You could try cleaning and lubing first, see if it made any difference.

I just remembered, (I haven’t worked on it yet) the odometer still reads totally accurate. Would you still say drive cable?

Yep. The speedometer may be bouncing around, but, the odometer moves much slower, so, it *looks* stable..... Taste and see. If the cable looks good, and the lube job doesn't fix it, maybe time to have a hard look at the cluster itself.

Alright, I’ll mess with that as soon as I can work on it, and hopefully remember to post an update.

Update: I finally got to work on it today. Took the cable out and cleaned with some pb blaster, then well coated with powdered graphite. That fixed the chattering and jumping around. it still registers ten over, but it does that when it’s parked and it’s consistently 10-11 over now up to highway speeds at least, so I’m happy with it. Thank you.
