Default NP241D transfer case issue

I'm currently resurrecting a 88 w150 that I just bought. It was sitting(rotting) for about 8 years. Changed T.Case fluid today. When I drained it only a quart came out. Many online sources say it holds 6 pints or 3 quarts. When I refilled the case I could only get 2 quarts in it. Could not get another drop in without it running out and I was on level ground. Any ideas?

Pull both plugs, and run some variety of solvent in the fill hole, see what comes out the drain hole.

I did that with brake cleaner after I drained it. With straw on can I sprayed half a can in there. It all ran out. Nothing obvious came out. I will run the 4x4 through all the gears for 5 minutes or so and drain it again.
