Default Transmission issues

I have a 88 d100 with the 318 auto transmission. The issue I'm having is the transmission only works in reverse, no foward gears are working. When its put into drive it dies. Is the transmission total crap? Is it more economical to fix the one i have or just replace it? Thanks for any advice or input.

The fluid was low, topped it off didn't seem to help. It has a rough idle and will kill the engine anytime i pull it into gear.

did you check it with the transmission in neutral while the engine is running? the transmission doesn't pump in park. have you done a tuneup on it?
