Hi, I'm new here and need some help. I recently purchased an '85 D150. When I run a VIN check on it, the VIN lookup sites say it is a 5.2L. However, somebody on the dodge forum posted a VIN decoder picture from an '82 service manual and it 1B7GD14TXFS544113 that my engine is a 5.9L 4 BBL. Can anybody assist me? My VIN is 1B7GD14TXFS######. Also, there are two automatic transmissions for this truck, how do I determine which I have.
318 or 360 will be cast into the side of the block, above the starter, therefore 5.2L or 5.9L as built. For a half-ton, may be a 904 Torqueflite. Look at a picture of the transmission gaskets, 904 does not have the 'ear' on the forward corner, forward corners are square.
Somebody spent some time loving that truck. Looking at that, I'd be embarrassed to post pics of my '85 W350 4-speed, wood hauler/snowplow.

This is the difference on the transmission pans between the two. You could easily have a 727 in there too if you're lucky. My 85 had a 727 in it and there was only a 5.2/318 from factory. I believe the 904 are also shorter overall but unless you have something to compare it to then its going to be difficult.
Someone loved that truck way more than mine as well. Good find!
