1988 Dodge D150 hesitation issue
Hey guys, I am new here so I’m sorry if I posted this in the wrong spot. I’m having an issue with my truck I purchased a few months ago. My friend and I have been working on restoring the truck. There’s minimal body rust, good frame, and runs pretty good. It’s a 1988 D150 4x2.
when I bought the truck the prior owner used it as a farm truck. He said after about 45 minutes it would “get hot / start to hesitate.”
So I have replaced in my truck
- throttle body
- tps sensor
- brakes, brake lines
- fuel pump, lines, filter
- injectors
- air intake sensor
- water pump
- radiator hoses
- fluids etc
(I know not all of these pertain to the hesitation issue. I just wanted to mention what I’ve done)
When driving and you give it throttle at a low speed it’ll cut out / hesitate. For about a fraction of a second. The longer you drive the truck the more frequent and worse it gets
At an idle it sounds like it’s rev’ing itself. Not all the time but occasionally. I don’t have a tachometer to see but you can hear it.
Motor has no knocks. It sounds good.
What’s next? Trying to get this thing completely safe and drivable but the hesitation causes issues especially if I drive it for awhile like I said.
My next move was to be to check the
- timing
- cap, plugs, wires
- vacuum test
? Any help would be appreciated.

How many miles on the truck. I've seen farm trucks with low miles but a LOT of idle time to high miles with heavy loads. Dodge trucks are better for heavy work, but time and work does take it's toll.
