seems risky hooking the pump up to run as long as they key is in the on position especially if he ever got in an accident. would be better off to spend a bit more and do it properly by installing a oil pressure switch to turn on the fuel pump. https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/sa...l-pump-wiring/
The problem with that is, you don't get fuel pressure until you have oil pressure.... so, very long crank times, and even worse in the cold.
I had a feeling the 89 had the long camshaft so I need the eccentric. I have located a engine wiring harness from a 87 along with the fuel tank so I believe this will be an easy project.
Here's a pic of my '90 for reference.
I had believed the rolller cam preceded fuel injection by a few years. I dont know the details of the short/long cam thing.

It shouldn't effect crank time unless you got a leaky carb. There should be more than enough fuel sitting in the carb to run it long enough for oil pressure to build and fuel pump to refill the carb. Is also way safer to do this because having the fuel pump running as long as the key is in the run position could be a major fire hazard if he got in an accident. also if you actually looked at the diagram in the article you are suppose to hook up the 1 wire from the oil pressure switch to the starter signal wire so that it does feed the carb fuel while cranking.

I don't believe a 87 harness would be plug and play and is quite different than a 89. It would also likely be easy to just use the the gas tank you already have unless the sending unit is damaged beyond repair.

Ooops. Quite right. Too used to fuel injection. I haven't played with a carb on a car/truck for years. Heck, even my tractors are fuel injected.
