1987 dodge d100 with no click no start. Clean truck with 40000 miles but all of the sudden I went out from running an errand and have no clicking at the relay when trying to start. I jumped the terminals at the starter to get home. I replaced the ignition switch wiring and have the same issue. I have also replaced the starter relay and same scenario. Battery terminals got cleaned and wires are in good shape. I wired in a push button temporarily so I could drive and that is when I noticed the ac fan won’t turn on as well as the cabin light. Blue wire on ignition is getting 12 volts when key "on" but I cant get 12 volts on the yellow when turning fully to engage the starter. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

 

Have you checked the neutral safety switch?

 

Not yet but it will start in neutral with the push to start so I thought no need to check it. Would I be wrong?

 

Did you check both ends of the cables? I'm thinking you may have a problem with the ignition switch, but I check the cables first anyway. The kay cylinder should pull a rod down to the switch which is usually on the steering column.

Basically, the switch isn't exactly close to the key cylinder. When you turn the key, it pushes a rod on the side/bottom of the column, that actually pushes the switch, which is further down. (at least, on the tilt columns.....) If you pull the knee panel, that hides all that stuff, it'll be obvious.

 

What are you referring to as the knee panel? It isn't a tilt column.

 

May still use the same style system, Don't know on that though. I haven't worked on anything that old in quite some time.

 

Pull the power panel off the dash under the steering column. About halfway down the column you'll find a bunch of wires going to the actual switch.

The key cylinder is more of a steering lock. It also works the ignition switch via a rod going down to it. Sometimes those go bad or you have a problem with the wires there.
