I'm guessing by tar you mean dry pavement. You should never use the 4wd on dry pavement because it binds up when you make turns. That is probably what you are hearing. Drive it on a dirt lot or grass lot and see if it still does it. My guess is no.

I have to dissagree with you. I drove my truck on tar in 4 wheel before and there wasnt any abnormal grinding. Driving on tar shouldnt hurt the 4 wheel drive at all. It does put more stress on the cv joints and if you turn hard enough the axles will start to bind which is normal. You could really do damage if turning as hard as you can and floor it.

The noise is new from the last time. Im pretty sure its the cv joints. I know that driving exclusivly on tar will wear out the front end parts more but its making a noise that it shouldnt make even when on tar. Im bringing it to the dealer tonight, i hope they just put in a new cv half shaft.

I did it just to see the condition of the joint. sounded worn. Well i went to the dealer and he was F-in gone! i was pissed. i drove for an hour and a half to the dealers place. So i found a big pit and beat the crap out of my truck. I didnt hear any abnormal noise in dirt and mud. Hell with it i say, if it does it on tar big deal.
