Which exhaust system??
hey guys, Im new to the forum but I recently bought my 99' R/T this past saturday and I was looking at a new exhaust for it. I've come down to either the Gibson or the Magnaflow, the Gibson states roughly 20 hp increase and 20-25 lb of tq increase. However the Magnaflow states nothing performance wise, at least nothing listed where I saw the two exhausts (jegs.com). If you guys have any opinions, or information at all that would be great, thanks alot.
in my opinon, i dont think any exhaust upgrade alone will give you 20 hp. Its mostly about preference. What actual sound is desired by the buyer. Are you going to be doing any other engine upgrades play a part as well. I hear that the stock exhaust is good for about 350 hp or so. Meaning that if you are going to modify more than that, then you should start thinking about headers, and true duals. Just kinda depends on what your looking for, and what you will be doing in the future.
There are all kinds of sound files online (try youtube and magnaflow websites) where you can listen to the muffler that is installed on your engine. Personally, after trying both magnaflow and flowmaster, i perfer the magnaflow. It has a deeper, less constrictive sound to me. But, like i said- its all about personal prefernce.

they claim it makes 20hp.. it doesnt. in the long run maybe when you have bord heads, headers, intake, cam ect.. becuase it lets the truck breath better, but on a stock engine.. the only thing you might notice is tab bit better throttle and of course the new music your truck makes.
have any of you guys tried to gibson exhaust? or compared it to the magnaflow for the 5.9? Im just looking for the throatier/dragster sounding exhaust. yes I realize I wont get a dragster sounding exhaust with either but I just want to know which of the two would sound closest to it? Thanks guys
if you want loud exhuast, and "dragster" sound then go straight pipes, depening on where you live it migth be illegal, if it is.. then just do a couple of dumps before the muffler.
I would do 2.5" back on flowmasters 40s and have a cutout right before the muffler, at idle it will sound like the muffled flowmaster, at mid-high rpm it will sound like a dragster.. i have a dump and when i pass people on the highway and it jumps to about 3-4k rpm i can see the people look in there side mirror when there window is up.. its very loud, and in some areas i like to have fun, if you tap the throttle while idling it will scare people in there front yards and people on the side of the road.

User2006- when you say a "cut-out" right before the muffler, what do you mean by this?

its basically an opening between the headers and the muffler, that the driver can control by switch. When you so wish, you can flip the switch, open the dumps, and the exhaust will come out right behind the headers (bypassing the muffler and rest of the pipe). Generally used in racing. Basically makes more power, because the exhaust has such a shorter travel. After all, the faster you can get the exhaust out, the moreefficent theengine is. -Just don't pass a cop with the cutouts open! lol
