Default what year engines fit

I am sorry this has to be my first post but here goes.
My son has a 97 dakota with a V6 and it seems the motor siezed yesterday. He was coming home from a weekend at the coast here in texas and the motor got hot and basically turned off. I dont know exactly what happened, but anyway the motor wont crank. So I am lookin at motors for the truck, I got a line on a wrecked 95 with a V6, are these engines the same. Or better yet what years do I need to be looking at for a direct swap.
Thanks in advance and hello to all.

i would probably try to get a 97 or newer engine. im pretty sure they changed some things in the computer for 97 so with an earlier one you might need to get that year computer to go along with it.

if you are just looking for a long block get intouch with www.jasperengines.com and they will have what you need. you can get ethier a complete motor or just a long block and take of the good used parts and install them on the new motor. forget about pulling motors from other trucks. you will need the complete wiring harness along with the pcm and other stuff. every year dodge puts new codes in thier computers to mess up everything . thats why most swaps dont work with the original harness.

so what makes you think a motor from jasper engines would work any better? an engine from the same year would be perfectly fine.

The 1995 should work in your 1996 truck, There wasn't much changes , be sure to use your 1996 intake manifold. And clean it out good.

96 and older trucks have a slightly different computer.
