Whining from rear end.
Hey everybody, theres like a whineing noise comming from my rear. And it gets louder as i go. Could it be U-joints going bad or does it mean my rear end is gonna blow?
Thanks..
Thanks..
Why is your Wife at the rear of your truck? Sorry had to ask. But seriously, check the fluid, check U-Joints. My rear one siezed and obviously seemed tight, but it was the culprit. I had to work and didn't have time to look at it too closely myself so I took it to a local shop, (A guy who I knew) and had him replace the rear u-joint, and service the diff. It cost me $200, parts and labour
Thanks, i had a similiar problem with my other truck. The rear was humming and finnaly blew. After i got it fixed, i had a u-joint going bad and it was humming. But i was told not to worry about it. I just got done driving it so i have to wait for the fluid to cool down to check it. Thanks for the advice everyone.
Ok, i found out that it isjust my tires. They are making the "whining" noise i was describing. My friends 2 wheel drive ram was making the same exact noise and he said that it is his tires.

Two things about the whining noise:
2 years ago, I had the dealership replace the pinion gears in the diff because they were gaulded. That worked for a while, but the noise came back.
At 45-60 mph the noise is most noticeable. It is a rear end problem, but I don't know if it's a U-joint because the rear-diff work corrected the problem for a while.
Another idea: whiney fuel pump? The noise occurs only when my 2003 Dak QuadCab 4x4 4.7L is given gas in the 45-60 mph range, and the noise does not occur at all outside of that range.
Additionally, 1 year ago, I went to a different dealership and was told by a service tech (who may or may not have been a jackass) that there is a TSB out calling for Dakota owners to gauge how bad the noise is by this method: If you can turn up the radio to drown out the sound, it is considered within normal operating limits.
I would counter: So are we talking Aerosmith or NPR "All things considered," because I can turn either up and both can be on the radio...

o yeah hes definately being a jackass, pop the differential cover off, check the condition of the ring gear cause if theres anything wronf with the pinion, it will definately show up on the ring gear *i beleive, someone come in and correct me please*, check fluid condition, and change fluid.. thats your best bet w/o going to a mechanic or a dealership
