Blown Motor - Where to Buy a replacement

Blown Motor - Where to Buy a replacement
Truck:
2003 Dakota R/T 5.9L
Problem:
Engine overheated, apparently for a long time, and is not repairable. (I was not driving at the time.)
Need Help With:
Where do I go from here? The local dealer quoted me $6900 to replace the motor, not including the Cat if its bad. They said they won't know until they replace and fire up the motor.
My ultimate goal is to spend as little as possible, but I want it fixed properly and not with junk. I am not afraid of buying a motor from a junkyard, or a crate motor, but I've honestly no idea who's better than who, etc.
I guess my questions are:
1. Whats the best replacement motor to get? In other words, will a smaller (5.2?) motor fit in without hassle? What other motor options do I have?
2. Are there any reputable places online to check with for crate motors, etc?
Thanks in advance!

RE: Blown Motor - Where to Buy a replacement
don't downsize.
you won't need to replace wiring/computers
mopar.com has the most basic prices you can find, and is as genuine as you can get
but call the local junkyards, an old engine is better than a blown one
and ask around, the local mechanics would know best what they'll charge to replace the motor and by buying it yourself, you save dealer/mechanic markup
did they say what is so wrong it can't be fixed?
it's OK to ask for a second opinion.

RE: Blown Motor - Where to Buy a replacement
The dealer called today and said that it was run well past just being over-heated, and that the heads are pretty messed up and the block is, or is likely cracked. I don't recall, but he sounded about as genuine as a service tech could, almost to the point where it sounded like he'd never seen anything like it.
I wasn't driving at the time it happened, so there's only one person who truly knows what happened, and you can imagine I'm sure I haven't gotten the "real" story. [&:]

RE: Blown Motor - Where to Buy a replacement
Any suggestions on what motors will or will not work? I see a few 5.9L motors, matching the VIN for Z, but coming out of 1500's or Durango's. Will those work?
