Default low oil pressure and low idle when stopped

Hello,
I have a 2001 Dakota Sport 3.9 V6. I got in the truck this morning and noticed it was idling funny, it seemed very round.. upon further inspection I noticed my oil pressure had dropped and the truck was only idling at around 500 rpms.... does anyone have any ideas? or experienced this problem before? Please let me know and thanks.

the truck as 80,000 miles on it.. Sorry about being ignorant here but what do you mean by a mechanical gauge? Thanks for your help.

no problem, just get a gauge like this... http://www.marshallinstruments.com/custom_gauges.cfm the electric type that comes on newer vehicles are easily plugged giving you inaccurate readings...

Oh alright..
So you think the gauge could be going which would cause the rpms to lower and the truck to idle funny? Thats interesting!. I will give it a shot and let you know thanks for your help.

I called a mechanic today, I just moved to a new area so I don't know anyone I can rely on yet to do work on my vehicle.. This guy said he bets its the oil pump or even a gasket.. I checked the oil and it looked fine it didn't have that milky look to it.. what is your input is this guy on the right track?

I also called another person to see what they thought and they mentioned the oil pump or a transmission problem.. He said the transmission cause it was idling so low...

I was just wondering what your thoughts on this? Thanks for your help.. I love my truck and Id hate to have to see it go! Thanks again

idle could be alot of different things.. id clean out ur intake, 500 rpms isnt bad realy about normal the pump sump could just be clogged, the cheapest way to check is to install a mechanical guage first...

more info on ur truck would be good too!

V6 3.9L, 2001. There is a strong gas smell coming from the exhaust when the truck is started.....does that help?

nope, never done a tune up. I have replaced and fixed things here and there.. I just replaced the plugs and wires about 4 months ago... I've had the truck for about 3 years now and only put 40,000 to 50,000 miles on it.. someone mentioned a vacuum hose too lol... I wish things weren't so hard to diagnose... appreciate your help.
