Oil Change Question?
Hey Guys,
I have an 2004, 4.7L V8, Dakota. The manual says 6qts. for an oil change. Whenever I change my oil I add 6qts. and it barely makes it to the beginning of the safe line. Is this normal? Is it ok to add another 1/2-3/4 qt. to bring it up to the middle of the safe zone on the dip stick?
Thanks

Yeah, it's level. Does it every time for 4 yrs. Just curious if anyone else had similar situation. I read somewhere else that said dipsticks are not that accurate and to just add six qts and mark a new line. I was just not sure where it should come to on the dip stick when its full.
I have an '03 4.7 QC and I get the 5qt jug at Walmart and change the filter everytime and it's always right on the mark when I'm finished. As far as I can tell, it doesn't use any or leak between changes. My change interval is 5000 miles.
I assume you check the oil when the motor is not running and its had time to settle into the oil pan right? Ive always put about 6 3/4 qts in the 4.7 motors. However that was in the durangos. (my shop does oil changes for Enterprise Rent-A Car)

Always make sure you are filling your oil to the correct level according to the dipstick. The manual sometimes will provde number based on a completely empty motor w/o filter, sometimes with filter, sometimes primed with or without filter. Just make sure your dipstick is reading correctly ona level surface and you will be fine. Also make sure to start your motor, let it run for about a minute, shut it down and re-check the level.
