AWD 2002 Dakota
the trucks do not have an open diff in the front from the factory, if you installed one than it has it, or if it has AWD it has an open diff in the front otherwise the fron diff is locked, put it in 4 hi on dry pavement and try to turn real tight like full lock and it wont do it, or if it will it will skip and you can hear tires squeal because they are slipping, and there will be a knocking fromt he front end that you can feel in the steering wheel. this happens because the front diff locks when you engange the 4hi setting so give you better traction in the snow/mud/whatever your on
well i guess there was something i didnt kno lol. im just curious now...is it more like an elocker or a like a clutch type limited slip?& what axle is that diff similar to? dana 35? dana 44?
i assume that its something that has a lock in it, but i have never had mine apart to see what it is, i just know that when i put it in 4hi/4lo it wont turn on dry pavement w/o squealing and skipping and that the only explanation is that the wheels are turning at the exact same speed and traveling different distances(it happens when you turn its why differentials were created) and it must lock completely, cant be lsd clutches or you would be able to turn ok, AWD is probably LSD clutches i really dont know much more but ill try to help if i can
AWD and 4Hi arent the same either. AWD means it's 2wd unles there's a difference in wheel speed between the front and rear tires, then it'll start sending power to all 4. 4Hi means it's 4 wheel drive regardless what the wheel sensors say.
