Default 98 dak problems

I have not been running my dakota much and it has developed a number of small problems. It is a 98 4x4 with a 5.2 auto and 167,000 miles. The only "mod" is a K and N air filter. Here are the problems;

1) The passenger side floor was soaking wet the last time I got in the truck. This has happened before. It doesn't seem to be the heater core. It is not anti-freeze on the floor and the level isn't low. uhyes,the windows were up.

2) If I drive it in damp conditions, the engine runs extremely rough under 2,000 RPMs. I have to run with the O/D off to keep the revs up. I recently replaced the rotor, cap, plugs and wires. No change.

3) I am getting a c.e.l on a random basis. Showing a misfire on number 4 cylinder. I installed a cat-back flowmaster exhaust last spring. Could this be the catalytic convertyer?

4) Last time I filled the gas tank,gas started leaking from under the truck when almost full. Once I quit dispensing gas, it quit leaking. Is there a vent tube?

5) My air conditioner clutch is frozen. Not a big problem this time of year in PA, but I priced new pumps and clutches last year and could not find a reasonably priced one.

Thank you for bearing with me and thanks for any help.

the rough running may be caused by the IAC on the back of the throttle body. Clean it up or just get a new one... it is basically a plunger that lets in air at idle.. it can get gunked up and quit working right. also check your TPS sensor or replace it. You should probably just take off your throttle body and clean it with some carb cleaner, they get pretty dirty and are one of the biggest causes of rough running. While you have it off, look down into the intake manifold with a flashlight and see if you see any pools of oil, if there is you have a bad plenum gasket. hughesengines.com sells a plenum reinfocement kit.. guaranteed never to blow out the gasket again. Do a compression test... that random misfire on the 4 cyl seems weird. if compression is ok you're probably looking at an ignition issue or bad fuel injector. as far as gas leaking when you fill it up... you probably just have a rusted filler neck... no big deal. for instructions on how to clean up the throttle body and stuff go to the "tips and tricks for v6 and v8 magnums" section on the top of the page. hope this helps

Had an issue with my 99 leaking gas last summer . When filling up I noticed a strong gas smell and my leg got REALLY cold. Filler neck had a pin hole rusted through shooting gas right at my ankle. just my $.02

my 98 dak with 152k is doing the same as yours when it's damp out with running rough but I never get any codes when it does that also I had a new exhaust from the engine all the way through put on and it's still doing it so I doubt it's your cat

Could be the injectors. Check out www.premiuminjectorservices.com. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

check to see if any of your wires in that area are expossed. It has to be something like that.

It isn't the exhaust it may be an injector. Check to see if your spark plug is bad or gapped wrong.
Make sure the wire is down on the plug tight and on the coil tight.
