Default exhaust sizes

wondering what the factory exhaust pipe sizes are at the muffler inlet and outlet. i have seen 2 1/4 and 2 1/2, is this correct and which is it? if i get a muffler with a 2 1/2 inlet and outlet then it wont fit on a 2 1/2 inch pipe will it? the next size up is 3" right?also the factory length so i dont have to buy adapters and elbows. i am buying a muffler and want to get the right size the first time so i dont have to mess around with having to go back to the store for more or different parts. thanks for any explaination and help...

I measured 2.5" OD which leads me to believe 2.25" ID.

you're better off just buying a 2.5 o/d in/out muffler and having a shop weld it in. it will last longer and you dont have to worry about clamping and so on.

When I buy mufflers, I buy whatever size the ID is. When I did exhaust work on my Neons, a 2.25" size muffler would still fit OVER the existing piping which was 2.25" ID. I have a couple of 2.25"'s laying around for my truck, I just can't decide how loud I want it to be...

I'll be doing a write up on my Dakota exhaust work whenever I get around to doing that (as well as a cat more than likely).

You could also try installing the muffler yourself and then temporarily clamping it on to drive it to a shop to have them weld it up quickly.
