Metal In My Diff!!!
I will confess that I didn't rotate my tires until about 25k miles this last time.
That must be what got me.
Okay, so waiting until the 3rd member explodes is a bad idea. Got it! Now, since I have to rebuild it, what should I do? Since I'm going to be in there anyway, should I change the gearing or do any other type of upgrading?
I use this truck as a daily driver.Itspends a lot of time on the freewaybut I also haul firewood and other stuff from time to time (when my friends ask me to help them move [:@]). Should I mess with the gear ratio or just replace the stuff with dodge OEM parts?

if i were you i would replace it with an aftermarket lsd unit. i've heard really good things about the auburn lsd and there are some other ones as well. i've also heard that the oem replacement ones are just as prone to breaking as the stock one is so i would definitaly go with an aftermarket one that is built better and will last longer. if its 4x4 you have to change your front diff gears to so i wouldn't mess with them unless its 2wd and you dont have the 3.92's then i'd maybe think about upgrading to those. anything higher will kill your highway mileage most likely.
Mine is a 4x4 with the 5 speed and I haven't even opened up the 4x4 axle yet. For all I know, there's metal in there too...
I'll check out the Auburn when I go to have it fixed.

If you are going to do it make sure you have the tools you need. Make sure it is the limited slip, mine were two barring seats that got trashed.

I was led to believe that this might be one of those things that's best left to a shop. Granted, I've done pretty much all of my own work on this truck from oil changes to brakes. The only things that I've taken it to the shop for are warranty/recall stuff and my shifter had problems at one point.
I've replaced third members before but it was the kind that come out in one piece and it was on Mazda RX-7s when I used to race autocross.
Are the Auburn LSDs like that where I just pull the old unit out and put a new one in?
I just got around to posting these pics of the metal. Any ideas where this came from?

that is the same thing that happend to me. it is your limited slip clutch that desintigrated inside your differential. i had the exact same pieces floating in mine as well
That is a keeper for the limited slip. It holds the pin in through the clutches. If both come out, the pin works it's way out & good bye differential. I have 8yr./ 80,000 mile warranty, so it cost me a hundred buck deductible. Unfortunately dealer just put a new factory posi unit in, so I will probably have the same to look forward to in the future. Repair would have cost $1,200 without the warranty. If you have to pay, look at the aftermarket differentials. Their better. This is what my pieces looked like.
