RE: flat towing behind dakota
I drive an 03 Quad Cab with the 4.7 and manual 5 speed. I often tow my 6x14 enclosed cargo trailer, which weighs about 4000lbs total. Three things I can tell you from first hand experience:
1. The rear leaf springs cannot handle much weight without a lot of squatting. I installed helper springs, but this only helped a little. I'm thinking about maybe installing air shocks soon.
2. Before I installed the electric brake controller, it was a real fun trying to stop. 4000lbs pushing from behind in significant. One time, this light turned yellow and I was number two to go through the light. I chose to stomp the gas rather than the brake, then that dude in front of me decided to stomp his brake. I purchased and installed the controller the next week.
3. The wind load from the trailer acts like a steel parachute at higher speeds. 5th gear is useless as I'll loose speed quick. Not much of a problem for the 4.7 at low speeds (under 45), but can drag you down at speeds approaching 65.

You should not flat tow a 4x4 which i hope the jeep is if it is lifted.

Flat towing will damage the transfer case of the towed vehicle...the case's,and poss. the trans's,oiling is driven by the input shaft...if the eng. isn't running, and the driveline is,(at highway speeds) there is no lube to the t-case,even in 2wd,...that being said,I'm not exactly sure whether this is true w/all makes or why ,but I do know that flat towing is said to do damage...check your manual...all that is aside from whether or not the tow vehicle is capable...don't be unsafe or you'll regret it!
