Default Cruise Control Wheel

My truck has a cruise control servo under the hood. The electrical connection is hooked up, the cable runs to the TB, etc. It all looks factory. But the steering wheel does not have cruise control buttons. I figure that if the truck originally had cruise, it should be as easy as swapping on a wheel with the cruise buttons.

My truck is a '97. Will/would any 97-04 steering wheel work? And I assume if it would, that would apply to Dakotas and Durangos, yes? My airbag is still intact. Even if I bought a steering wheel that had the airbag deployed, I'd be able to swap my good airbag across, yes?

Thanks for any advice.

Youshould be able to install the cruise switches on your existing steering wheel.

That'd be wonderful. I didn't know you could mount them to an existing steering wheel (but I guess that makes sense).

I was looking on Alldata, and it appears that the clockspring will have the harness end for the cruise control that I'll have to plug the switches into, yes? I hope all trucks have that wiring. I guess I'll find out soon enough (whenever I remove the wheel).

Please let me know what you want for the switches shipped to zip 23814. Then I'll PM you with my address and other details.

Thanks!

Yeah, the switches and the steering wheel are made so that they can be factory or added later without changing the wheel. The clockspring will have the female end of the harness connector but I'm not sure about the little bit of harness behind the airbag, but I'll send that too just in case you need it. As for the other wiring, if the cruise servo is there and connected I would assume the rest is there. As for the price, how about $20 for the switches and according to UPS, $10 for shipping.

Just thought I would chime in since it's on topic, I have cruise in my truck, but since I did the engine swap cruise doesn't work. Not sure if the button works for on because the light bulb is burnt out for cruise. But the dash works, I do have CE light, also a OD off light, not sure why, the button works fine... The engine had cruise before, i was in the truck had the buttons ect... The harness was on the engine when I got it. Never took anything off.

1997 dakota 4x4 3.9 but now 5.9.

JasonA, if the truck came with cruise then you should have the clockspring with the cruise wiring. When you take the airbag off you'll know. You will have two loose connectors in there with two wires going to each one. The switches are held in place by two screws each. If you take the airbag off and the only connectors there is the one hooked to the airbag and the one for the horn then you'll need a new clockspring with the cruise wiring also.

Yellowjacket, thanks for that info. So if'n I do go in there and the wires are NOT there, is the clockspring the only other thing I'd need to add? Is everything else downstream of that "pre-wired", or indifferent to cruise or not? I have the servo under the hood, and it's plugged into a wire harness end. It looks pretty old and grungy...like it's been there since new. I'm pretty sure my truck had it...and the switches have just gone missing somehow over time.

That would be the only other component that I know of. Basically when you push a cruise button it sends the signal through the clockspring wiring to the pcm, which monitors various other sensors and if the parameters are met it sends the correct signal to the servo.
