Default 1998 Diesel dakota swap

I'm planning on swapping a 6.2 liter GM Diesel engine in my 4x4 dodge Dakota.i don't know what im getting into, but i am determined to get better gas mileage out of this exceptional vehicle. I want to do this because i have a love for tinkering with cars,Also this would be an awesome project car that would be environmentally and economically sound for the future.I will be converting this engine to run on Straight veggie oil(SVO) @~2.60 gallon. Anyone with experience please chime in. What Transmission+ transfer cases would work with this. The truck currently has a 5.2 liter with 4x4. I would like to use the existing transmission and transfer cases.Persuade or Dissuade please!Opinion opinion Opinions!!!!!!!

Well i would go with a 3.9L cumins diesel engine. It is a strait 4 and is the same design (i think) as the 5.9 strait 6 in the rams until last year. Apparently this is an easy engine to find. Hopefully Johnymagnum will stop buy he is doing this to his first gen.

i definitively considered putting in a cummins 4bt 3.9l 4cyl but found that the cost is a little to high.plus i have a guy selling me a 6.2 liter Gm Diesel for 440 dolars that was rebuilt 15,000 miles ago.

if you do that you will be changing everything in your truck or doing A LOT of wiring... (You can get custom adapters for the engine to tranny, so you might be able to salvage the drive train... some how... lol.)

Dont use a GM diesel motor! Cummins is the best in the world, get something you know is better, even if it costs more to start.

i was about to say that......if you could magically somehow do this....i would do a cummins engine, allison trans, and ford tranfur case....but i know unless you own/know of a machine shop that will make u custom mounts...dont even try......hell i hate fords but the 440 is much better the nte 6.2 GM pile.......go get youself a cummins and stay true to dodge.......if you can get somethign better to start out with in the beggining it will save you so much then looking back and wonderign how things would have been with a different set up.......

idk if they make anyhting bigger the the 5.9L deisel?????

anything bigger than a 5.9 and you're gonna be looking at expanding your engine bay. (if you wouldnt need to do it with a 5.9, they're still bigger than a 360)
the 4BT is the best engine for this swap, but since you're getting a GM.
it won't work without an entire new driveline, period, you will need all new engine management. re-enforce the entire front half of the frame. actually, you'll need an entire new front half.

and you probably won't need to worry about how ecofriendly it is, you won't pass emissions unless they're not required in your state.

not to shoot you down or anything, it may be easier to put a dakota body onto a gm with the 6.2

ok, I would definatly go with a 4BT swap. they are not as expensive as you think. well it depends how wild your going. I'm pushing 60+psi with TT. I built my motor up for that. but you can easily push 30psi stock. I picked up my motor for 1k. it came out of a frito lay truck. then I scrapped out the truck and got most of my money back. rebuild kits are cheap as hell. i got mine for around $500 for a complete rebuild kit. then I got head studs for it and all that. plus you can get an adapter so it will bolt up to your stock tranny. I'm still saving up for a NV4500 for my 88 dak so it can be driveable.

heres a website will all the information you will need on this swap www.4btswaps.com

theres a reason even chevy people are doin this swap. these engines are tough as hell.

There is reason the GM is so cheap. No demand (no one wants it)

i dont see that happening unless you have like a masters in engineering from harvard university. and besides, putting a GM diesel in a Dodge is an insult, it's almost as bad as putting in a powerjoke diesel.
