Which bearing is bad now??
It's time to play the "guess which bearing went bad now"...
My truck started making a whining/humming noise at about 170,000. It only makes the noise when my foot if off of the gas. Any time I touch the gas pedal (enough to keep a steady speed or to accelerate) the noise goes away. If i take my foot off of the gas, about a second later, it starts making noise again. I took it to the dealer to have the universals checked and they said that they are all fine. It's probably not a front wheel hub assembly because it's dependent on whether or not I have my foot on the gas pedal.
Any ideas?

Assuming it does it in all gears, that kind of noise (only on accel.) is typically associated with pinion bearings or carrier bearings, and probably in the rear diff. When you put your foot on the gas, you load the diff and if one of the bearings is worn, it can whine. The same thing cn also happen if the diff fluid level has been low for a long time, causing abnormal gear wear.
Anyway, thats my .02

place it in neutral and see if the noise is still there. If there is no noise it is your rear end unless you got AWD than it could be like suggested some slop in the pinion/ring gear bearings. (Give the engine a little tap on the rev.)
Just like having your foot on the gas, deceleration loads the diff bearings in the opposite direction. It still isn't really possible to determine which bearing, but you might want to remove the diff cover and see if you have alot of metal shavings in the bottom. Or thats what I would do anyway.
