Hello all.

I am new to the forums and wanted to say Hi. My name is Steve and I live in Orlando, FL. I am currently looking into a truck and wanted to get some opinions from you all before I put the cash down.

The truck is a 2001 Dakota Quad cab 5.9L
vin: 1B7GL2AZ11S138974 **If anyone can run that, it would be great*
Has 108,xxx miles on it and power everything.

They are asking 4k for the truck and from what I have seen so far, the truck looks really nice. I am going to drive it soon, but wanted to hear anything that I should look for, or be concerned for with this truck. Being a 5.9L is one of the cons for me because I am not really getting this for towing or anything of that sort and dont really need anything that big. I do not drive everyday, I car pool with room mate to work and such, so its not going to be driven everyday. I maybe drive 3 days a week.. if that.

Being over 100k and a 2001 wanted to see if there's anything specific I need to look for, or make sure that it was already taken care of. Also if 4000 is a good price for the truck, I was going to offer 3500 cash and go from there depending on what the truck looks like and feels like when I see it in person.

-Steve

hello. quad cab with the 5.9 is a pretty rare combination. if you are looking for something with good gas mileage, than look elsewhere but since you won't be driving much and since currently (knock on wood) gas is cheap i wouldn't worry about it. overall just drive it an make sure everything is sound. the tranny is the only problem spot that i have heard about but since i dont have an automatic, i really couldn't tell you much more.

basically just drive it and see how you like it... also does it have any mods?

I think the 4.7 is a more reliable motor, but if that truck has been well taken care of it should be ok. The tranny is probably the more concerning spot seeing its an auto, mine only made it to 130k but it was a lemon.

bpark, i don't think that the auto you had is the same auto that he is looking at... what engine did you have your old "lemon"?

Ok yeah depending on your point of view that can be either a good or a bad thing. If you are looking to mod, having the 5.9 is a very good thing as there is a ton of aftermarket stuff out there for it, having the 4.7 makes it a little bit more difficult as there isn't quite as much of an aftermarket for it.

Just to let you know, from what i said earlier about the automatic with the 5.9, that is all things i have heard/ read/ dealt with at the dealership so im not the best expert on here in regards to that. we will just have to wait for someone with a little more experience to jump in and give their .02....

Cheers

the 5.9 v8 is a reliable motor, near bullet proof. however the 46re does need attention, even in stock form. they can be killed if beaten on regularly. as for the the 4.7 v8, good engine, no complaints, better transmission (45RFE) mated to that thing.
