turbo 3.9L?

turbo 3.9L?
After watching and being very impressed with the syclone design, and the fact i have a good chance of getting my dad's beater single cab 98 dakota, I'm thinking about a turbo setup for the v6 motor he has.
I tried searching for any other turbo 6's and couldn't find anything in the dakota section other than a few NX writeups.
Thinking about rebuilding the block to handle 20psi? maybe a shot of NX but I've never been a fan of nos.
Looking to make a sleeper that'll get 18-22 mpg (thus the turbo concept with a v6 instead of swapping my old ram's 360 in the Dak)

ok so go ahead and do it, prepare to spend alot of money. In fact, you'll have to pay someone so much money that they'll have to create a forged crank because no one makes one. You're basically stuck with the stock bottom end on a 3.9. The good news is they are pretty tough and can handle 6-8 pounds of boost stock. your best bet is to get a small single turbo, possibly one from an old 2.2 I4, and create a custom setup for it. You'll have to change ignitions to something that can control boost and retard the timing and all that stuff. Running 6 pounds on a stock 3.9 will probably get you the mpg range you're looking for, and with a few other mods will be just as quick as a stock R/T.

haha, ok with the inline six setup i wanted was to run 8lb boost. i put that question mark after the 20 cause i have no idea what a magnum would hold up too. my 360 must be a lemon in terms of mpg cause at one point, i took a trip to ohio and got 17 mpg on a 500 mile trip. since then, it's been anywhere between 7-12 mpg city/hwy. the 7 is when i was rompin on it though, lol.
my dads v6, i can put 3 gallons in and run around all the places i need to go, have a little fun down this dirt road, and still make it back.
would it be worth it to put in hypereutic pistons with a stock crank? not sure if that's logical or not.
what's up with the 239 getting similiar mileage as a 360? that's a huge displacement difference. is the 360 efficient while the 239 is not, or is the 239 a bad design? i don't get it.

A dakota isn't that big though. what cubic inches is a 4.7L? I've got an offer for 800 for my ram (tranny slippin) and i'm considering it, but if honestly I don't have much to look forward too in terms of keeping the v6, what would it be worth to swap my 360 in the dakota instead of a turbo setup?

4.7L = 287ci.
I personally would put the 360 in the dak. A turbo set up would cost a lot more than swapping a 360. Plus you could throw a set of heads on or a cam and still be cheaper than a turbo set up.
Just in my personal experience it seems like turbo set ups always have problems, it may not always be the case but in my experience it has been.
But its up to you dude. Id got 360.

yeah the 360 would be nice, and you don't have to worry about the turbo messing up or just the cost of fabricating the engine so you can run the 6-8 psi. if you have the money, go with the turbo setup, probably won't see any more onthe street that are running the same setup... if i was you and i had the money, you could probably do a 360 w/ S/C for the cost of a turbo on the 3.9
