To answer your question about your trans, yes it has to reach a certain temp before it will shift out. Mine does the same thing, has since I bought it. It dang sure don't that freakin' cold here.

Well today it was -20c so I think thats pretty warm 
better then -35c without windchill then -43c with windchill. But today it shifted just fine, just the cold that was causing it, as you guys said.

yeah it was -19 overnight here and when i tried to start my truck up it was BAD... creeks and groans and all sorts of grinding and pain. thank god i did synthetic fluids or else it would have been miserable
