Allright guys I got a question for all of you. I got a 97 dakota with the 3.9 auto 2wd. The tranny is on the way out. My plan for the future was to get rid of the v6 and put the 318 5.2 in it. I know the v6 tranny bolts to the v8 moor. My question for you guys is would the 5.2 auto tranny bolt to the 3.9 motor. I want to use the 5.2 tranny on my dakota for a few months before I can get the 5.2 motor in.
i believe that all the 3.9/5.2/5.9 motors and trannies are interchangeable, i KNOW tha Varsis did a 5.9 swap from a 3.9 and kept his original tranny, so the 3.9 IS compatible w/ the 5.9, granted it probably will NOT last very long under those conditions since it wasnt built to take that kind of abuse, but they will bolt up.
I was on the site car-part.com looking for a 5.2 tranny which i believe is a 44re... Which cars can this come off of. If i search 97 dakota 5.2 tranny it only comes back with 97 dakots tranny's.Sorry for my questions but I just want to buy the right tranny. If i change the year to a 98 dakota 5.2L it shows trannys for 98 and 99 year dakotas. The tranny will be mated to a 97 dakota 3.9L motor for a few months then it will be changed to a 5.2L motor this summer
44re is a 42re with 2 extra clutch packs per gear set.
Oh, btw with the year thing. I think it's probably the connectors are different on the tranny. Which may cross reference it different. Otherwise it should bolt up just fine, more or less a drop and swap!
yeah as shrp said, they will bolt right up but might not take the abuse all that well. if varsis is able to run a 5.9 on the 3.9's tranny than there should be no problem of you running a 5.2 on a 3.9 tranny.
so i can look for a 5.2L tranny from a dakota, durango, 1500, and the vans... And I'm not going to be running a 5.2 engine on a 3.9 tranny.... for a bit im going to run a 3.9 motor with the 5.2 tranny... then by summer the 5.2 or 5.9 still undecided will be dropped in
yeah that should work. or you could just change it all at once, maybe making it a little easier... (basically wait until you have both engine and the tranny that you want, and just swapping them in at the same time.)
