Default rear axle

Will the rear axle from a 99 Dakota fit in a 2003? It is labelled 1919B. Might get it from a salvage yard and put it in my truck because it has 3.92 gears.
Thanks

they may be the same size but in 03, you have rear disk, in 99 they were drums.

Ok then could I take the gears from this -DAKOTA 98-99 4x2, hexagon cover (12 bolt, 9.25" ring gear), 3.92 ratio- and put in my 2003 12 bolt 9.25" rear end to get rid of the 3.55's? Hope that made since.

Not a good idea since you have a 4x4. You'll either want to change the front to the same gearing, or basically forget about using 4WD (try, pulling the front driveshaft to prevent an expensive incident)

I can get a 3.92 front diff for $150 that's why I was asking about the rear gears.

you can do a gear swap as long as you keep the ratios the same in both axles on a 4x4.

Thanks, I actually already know that. My question is will the ring & pinion gears themselves swap over from the older diff into the newer diff.

as long as it's the same axle, i dont see why not. you could confirm this with a transmission shop or looking around on the internet. i dont know off hand.

if you can get the axles dirt cheap, and same with the rear I would just do the switch, doing gears would be more time consuming that just swapping in a new rear end.

Also, when doing this, you could probably just remove the hubs from the rears and swap them over. Putting the disks on the older axle. (may require some welding but who knows. )
