The auto trans in my 97 Dakota 2 w/d v/6 is shot. What model years will fit it? Some of the ads I see say that 97 is all by itself. If so is it a matter of having to change a sensor or something or will others just not fit? THANX in advance for your help

I believe your truck would've came stock with a 42re transmission. If so any year between 97-04 should work.
44re, and 46re, were also offered on these trucks 97-04 behind the 5.2 and 5.9 motors. These should bolt up and function just fine behind your v6 as well I believe, but I may be mistaken about this.
the 3.9, 5.2, and 5.9 all used the same transmissions. you could pull one off another truck that had one of these engines and you'll be able to do a direct bolt on swap.
the only difference i think is that one is man. and the other is auto?
You can also look for a 42RE or a 46RE from 1996 Dakota. Rams also share the same drivetrain during certain years. A few more to make your hunt a little easier.
