Welcome to the forum RJWoody.

Just a heads up. It's a 6 year old thread so don't expect a response. I do agree with your statement though.

Be careful with trailer wiring, if you do not have a factory harness, consider installing an aftermarket harness. My understanding is that if the trailer has a lot of lights on it, you could burn out the light switch in the dash. Kits are available to put a relay in the circuit to the trailer so this will not happen. I think mine was about $150 installed.

I have a '97 with the 3.92, 5 speed and the 3.9L V6. I have never towed more than 2500 lbs or so with it, but it will do it. Sometimes I need to keep it in 4th gear on the hills though.

You should be fine. I recently towed a 4 wheel trailer from Atlanta to Virginia and returned with a car on it. That's around 900 miles with this 4.7L. I have the factory tow pkg with ATF cooler. The truck performed flawlessly and had plenty of power. I made sure tranny and rear diff had fresh fluids. I also used a brake controller to engage the trailer brakes. You probably don't need anything that involved with the weight you're pulling.
