same here i have a 2000 4.7
making a nasty clicking sound(im sure that its a broken rod or spun bearing)
it kinda depends on where you live..i cant find a remandd one for under 2700 and a new one from dodge is 6k, and a junkyard wants way to much for ANYTHING under 100kmiles....

any 4.7 from the year 2000 - 2002 will directly boolt right up
other years have different computers and crank tooth numbers

Where you get it is up to your wallet. How much can you spend. Remanufactured one will be way higher the Junkyard. But much better. So call around some parts stores and some junkyards and see what you want to do.

Im gonna ask the noob question. If one was to rebuild his own motor what exactly is involved? What actually gets replaced?

My motor might need some big help soon

Depends on what's needing replacement. If you do it by the textbook, it's not cheap- clean-up overbore, get heads trued up, new .030 pistons, might survive using stock rods unless they're damaged/thrown, new main bearings, list goes on.

AFAIK a cummins physically wont fit in a dakota without some serious work? Namely a huge suspension?

give or take

the 4 banger is lighter then the I6 that come in the rams

and doing a deisal swap is in my mind harder and not worth it in the long run
