Default bellhousing/tranfer case separation

i have a 2002 dodge dakota 5-speed and i need to separate the bell housing from the gearbox. I have all the bolts out and was able to separate them about 1/4 inch but they will not move any further

A bellhousing is on the transmission and it bolts to the engine and houses the clutch/torque converter and your transmission does not have a removable one.

So are you saying you've unbolted the t-case from the tranny but it won't move back more than 1/4" inch?

the bell housing and gearbox casing, as hahn said, should be one piece.

Correct, the bellhousing itself does not separate from the transmission, it integrated into the front half of the case. Now that you've revised your post I seen you mean you're trying to split the tranny.

Here's an exploded view.

I highly suspect it's the shift rails holding it together.
