Default 00 vs 02 Netural Safety

The tranny on my 02 dakota just kicked the bucket. I have a 00 dakota tranny that is also 42RE but the problem is that the Netural Safety Switch is different between those years.

Any way to get around this like an adapter? I have been looking and found an adapter for the old NSS to plug into a newer tranny (http://www.sonnax.com/part_summary.php?id=3468&pl=3) but not the other way around, which I need since I have the newer plug on the 02.

Any help would be appreciated as it would be real unfortunate that just a NSS incompatiblity would screw me over.

Just use the 02 switch and cut the wires to fit that switch.

Its 5 wire vs three wire. How would that exactly work? Also would that affect the computer at all?

Can I splice the 3 wire harness connector to my 5 wire leads and plug in a 3 wire sensor? The tranny I picked up only has the small 3 wire sensor.

negative, ghost rider*

*You can, but only for reverse and neutral signal. You'll get the scrolling shift indicator and possibly a CEL because the PCM won't know what position the shifter is in.

My question is can I do the opposite? 🤔 I'm trying to put a 5 prong nss transmission in a 98 with a 3 prong set up harness is there anyway I can make it work? If so do you know which I need to splice I have a 5 prong plug and a harness with 3 prong plug currently I've tried ordering a case adapter like everyone says to get and it didn't work I even tried multiple new nss 3 prong plugs to eliminate that being the issue

On the 5-pin harness:

1. Red/Green: 12 volt input
2. White/Green: Mux Encoded Output
3. Blank
4. Violet/Black: provides 12 volts to backup lamps (connects to pin 1 in reverse)
5. Green/Gray: 5V sensor supply
6. Black/White: Neutral Safety (shorts to case ground in park/neutral)

So yea, you can connect the 3 wire chassis to the 5 wire transmission using pins 1, 4, and 6.

I had just done this about 30 minutes ago now I have a transmission temp and od off light and neither will go away
Any idea if maybe another wire needs to be hooked up possibly? I have 1, 4, and 6 hooked up properly to the purple, black, and brown wires and won't shift to overdrive and light is on but trans temp light is also on now

That is related to the 7-way connector on top of the transmission case by the shifter linkage. It sounds like a ground is lifted possibly.
