Default T-case

Hi, i did some looking around, but not a whole lot as id rather just get some quick answers immediately,

i have a 1999 dakota sport 3.9 v6 manual.
i blew the transfer case, and i have the option of either replacing it, or i am wondering if it would be possibly to just have the transfer case removed, and have just a 2 wheel drive.

i am told it should be easy considering it is a part time case, 2 wheel all the time unless i make it 4x4, which is also part of the problem, ive never used 4x4, what would cause it to blow?

any opinions on what i should have done please would be greatly appreciated

You could look for a two wheel drive tail shaft and see if you can fit it.

Like varsis said, you are going to need a 2WD tailshaft for the transmission, just swap in a whole 2WD transmission, or replace the transfer case. The only 2 things I can think of that would cause it to blow are losing most/all the fluid or a bound up Ujoint in the driveshaft.

so if i just got a driveshaft from a 99 2 wheeler it should be fine right?

EDIT

are 1998 parts compatable with the 99? and it has to be the same engine size right?

You will also need the rear portion of the transmission out of a 2wd.

why is that? and do you know the exact name of the piece? im pretty much going in tomorow and fgetting what i need, and i suspect making a 2wd is cheaper than replacing the transfer case

Actually, finding an np231 should cost too much at all. They were used in alot of vehicles.

The difference is tail shaft (& housing). I would personally just get an np231 and stick it on. You can probably get one for ~$100.

I agree. Why go through all this work of finding transmission components, driveshafts, etc, when you can just put a different t-case back on an retain the 4x4 capabilities. Also, I've heard that NEVER using 4x4 is bad for the system, which is probably why it broke. Don't quote me on that though, I have a 2wd

id like you to find me a new t case and direct me, everything i find is something about 10 times that price. however i have only looked online.

a rebuilder kit is more than 100 bucks even. ive done research on pricing, and as far as im made aware, a new (longer) rear drive shaft is all i would need to connect the transmission to the rear diff. and thats it, and now apparently theres a rear portion of the tranny that is on 2wd's that would be needed, and im still sure these parts are cheaper than the thousand bucks this place
http://racetransmissions.com/store/i...th/304_308_430
sells for.

and if i go to a junker, chances are it would end up breaking down anyways, so to prevent that, id buy the thing, and rebuild it.

im looking at alternatives, im alittle strapped for cash and again, im pretty certain its cheaper just to get the 2wd shaft thrown on
