Question 1999 Dakota 4x4 Auto trans interchange

Hello,

I have a 1999 dakota 4x4 V6 automatic. The reverse just went out in it. I was told I could only use a trans from a 98/99 V6 dakota/Durango. Is this true? If not what transmissions are interchangeable?

I was also told it could be the computer or diaphram?

Any help would be appreciated.

Jeff

Will a transmission out of a 5.2 Dakota 98/99 work behind my V6? The junk yards say they are not interchangeable??

Salvage yards are in business to sell parts. That being said, I'd beleive them. Even if you got one from a 5.2 and got it in and working, these transmissions are computer controlled. You would have some PCM re-programming, and since the yard says no go, you might not get amy kind of warranty. (Not being used for the proper application.)

Just remember, they might warrranty the trans, but they do not warranty labor. If you get a bad one, the labor charges to r&r the trans would be your responsibilty.

Default research

I have been researching this all day. What I have been reading is many swaps from the 3.9 to a 5.2 or 5.9 retaining the 42RE transmission. There is not much info in swapping a 44RE or 46RE in place of the 42RE....

Anyone have some solid info?

I can find plenty of V8 transmissions but cant find a used one for a 3.9

i told you already on dakota-durango they will fit either just make sure you don't get a 1995 or older which wouldn't fit anyways. 98-99 46re will bolt up it may just not fit without massaging the metal. 1997 the plugs are different on the tranny, and 2000+ you would be changing out the neutral safety switch.

Default sorry

Sorry for my ignorance. What kind of alterations would be necessary for a 46RE? When you say massage the metal
