5.2 to 5.9 questions
After all the work done to my truck pcv, intake gaskets, and O2's, it's still burning oil like crazy all i can think is the rings
so if that's the case i want to swap in a lower mileage 360 instead of rebuild this motor. i would like to know what trucks or vans the motor can come out of. and my truck is a manual trans so what will i need to make that motor work with my trans. and last do i need any computer stuff too or just motor and old computer stuff will work? i would really appreciate the help and maybe some suggestions on what to do to the motor while it's on the stand before going in... thanks
Burning? or Leaking??? If it is burning that much oil, it should be smoking bad enough that you'd be embarrased to drive it. It has to be going somewhere. I doubt that the belly pan gskt on the intake would consume quite that much oil but I could be wrong. I would start with a compression test and check for blow-by.
At that rate of consumption, your neighbors should be paying you for mosquito abatement this summer. That blue smoke has got to be quite a sight.
FWIW, belly pan gasket seems to be around a quart every 1000, but it surely would depend on the severity of the leak. Wouldn't it?
What came with a 5.9???
Ram
Dakota R/T
Durango
Jeep Grand Cherokee Limiteds have a 5.9, but I don't know about implantability into the Dakota. I don't see why not...
Given that list above, I am guessing you are going to want to find a Durango if you go the junkyard route. I don't foresee a lot of R/Ts sitting in junkyards and Grand Cherokees are just plain PRICEY. To me, a Durango is a fairly easy to find vehicle and it seems less likely to have been subject to abuse than a full size truck would have been. Soccer moms hitting deer = Durangos in the junkyard. Construction workers killing their truck = Rams in the junkyard. Just my stereotyping of what I would argue are the typical sorts of uses the two vehicles are put to.
Search Craigslist and find someone local to you? There are a TON of 360s on there, but I have no idea where you are located so I can't give you a specific link.
There is a sticky at the top of the forum. According to that, the 5.2 and 5.9 are pretty much the same such that everything transfers from one to the other.
Not to insult anyone but i have done my fair share of engine swaps even same year and make vehicles and there is always a hick-up with something... i am assuming that a durango would be the same but problem is most 360's i find are auto and my truck is manual and it's going to stay a manual lol. from everything i have read from several different sights i can find about any 360 from 94-01 or 02 i can't remember when they stopped making them but everyone who has done swap has an auto... any reason?
and yes at that rate of consumption it blows enough smoke to make all the prius owners around here cry and mr exxon smile! the only leak up front is the one drop that falls from the rear main when it sits over night... definitely not enough to explain the 1-2 qts a day i put in it...

oh and the belly pan of the intake was really bad but after replacing i have noticed that's not it's only problem...

Sounds more and more like broken rings. And BTW, congratulations on sticking with the manual. Non R/T dakota's did come with a 5.9. I think they were only available in a Quad Cab 4x4 configuration. other than that, ally is right, Ram, Dakota, Van, Durango. I think your best bet is to find one from wherever but then I believe you are going to run into a ballance problem being as how the 5.9 is externaly ballanced. I'm not sure, but I think you can remedy this by using a flywheel from a manual transmission 5.9 Ram. You'll have to find the answer to that one on your own. but please feel free to let us know because I am considering doing the same swap for my project R/T Clone.
well dont wait too long cuz it can really screw your motor up cuz i am pretty sure that's the source of all the problems i am having
started out by burning some oil... then plugged o2s and started running rich and has been run that way for so long the rings are shot... that's my guess of what has all happened to this poor beaten truck... PO was not as nice to it as i am so now i am stuck cleaning up the mess
