after a few grand in upgrades, i like it, stainless header 4.0 ported/polished TB, jet chipped gasket matched intake 2" exaust all the way back to a flowmaster 44 dumped, accel coil 8mm wires. few other things slipping my mind
ive had a couple problems with parts wearing out, but its been abused and nothings been major. its the same motor i had in my jeep and they're tough as nails, just dont expect any stump pullin TQ or smart car fuel mileage im sittin pretty around 15-16 mpg
ive got it around 150 hp best as i can tell. last dyno was 120 and that was before the big mods

I drive a 97 4banger dakota daily, and its fine around the city, but on the open freeway it isn't fun to drive. Then again, my engine has 220k and the fuel pump is going out. I also have 3.55 gears, something a little higher might help with freeway acceleration. I get 22mpg on average. In winter, I get 20.5 mpg consistently, and in the summer I get 25ish. My best was 29mpg once.
If you want a fast vehicle or you need to tow something regularly, look for a dakota with a larger engine. If you need a truck for hauling a little cargo and daily driving, the 4 cyl is a good choice.
For what I use it for, city driving and a little freeway driving, combined with the mpg I get, its the perfect vehicle.
Just make sure you test drive it well before buying (duh)
