Default What is the thing after my muffler?

Have a stock exhaust on an '04 QC 3.7....there is an oval-shaped "thing" just after my muffler, almost looks like a post-cat type thing but has no O2 sensor attached. Anyone know what this is? Possibly a resonator or something?

More importantly, is it necessary? OR, if I eliminate it, will it free up a few hp?

Thanks for the info.

muffler on a stock 04 3.7 is in the rear, nothing is after it...but the tip. there should be a res. before that, and a post cat..cat...if it has rounded edges its a res, straight its a cat.

There definately IS something after it, the cats (one for each cylinder bank) are in teh front of the truck and come straight off the exhaust manifolds...then following the exhaust towards the back of the truck there is nothing else until the muffler. It does have rounded edges though, its oval shaped and welded to the tailpipe. Let me see if I can figure out how to upload a picture.

Ok, so I am about to replace my muffler, I assume that I should just leave it there? Sounds like it doesn't really rob any power from what you are saying...should I leave it?

If you're putting in a stock muffler id leave it, but if you are putting in a high performance system, flow master, magnaflow, cherry bomb, id take it out as it would cut down on the resonance you're trying to achieve, All it does it tone down the noise a tad bit.

I am putting on a Dynomax super turbo muffler and leaving the stock exhaust pipes...I am just trying to add a LITTLE bit of sound, but I DONT DONT DONT want it to sound like crizzap, since it is a V-6 after all.

I just want a sound that is slightly louder than stock, and free up the exhaust flow a little bit. I don't want it to sound raspy, it has a nice, smooth, deep tone now for a 6 cylinder because I put a short ram intake on it.

I am not the type to put a 2 chamber flowmaster on a 6 cylinder. I know it's never going to sound like an 8 cylinder, because it only has 6 cylinders.
