Default Transmission noise

New member here, very nice site you guys have. I recently purchased an '01 Dakota Sport with a 4.7 and an automatic. Runs awesome and has nice power. But, I hear a low zipper type noise when putting it in drive or reverse. Sounds almost like tightening down on a big zip tie. I can't hear it unless I have the door open or the window down. The tranny shifts into gear fine although a little sluggish IMO. Thinking of installing a shift kit to firm it up a little, but not until I'm sure this noise isn't a problem waiting to happen. Tranny fluid looks and smells good and is at the correct level. Anybody have any idea what this noise is?

lol a zip tie. nah i dont know man. redneck rules disqualifies that from being a problem b/c in order for it to be an actual problem you would have to hear the noise with your windows up, and door closed. so your fine. . . .[sm=smiley2.gif]

Heh...yeah...but I don't trust the redneck rulebook and have never lived by it. [8D] I was wondering if anyone else has heard this noise on their truck and is it anything to be concerned with. It only last for about 2-3 seconds but happens everytime I move it in and out of gear. I have owned several automatic vehicles over the years but never a Dodge and have never heard this noise before.

Thanks for the reply. I found a TSB for earlier models having this "buzzing" noise and it said the modulator is resonating and doesn't seem to be anything to worry about. Other boards are discussing it and it seems normal. I purchased both filters, a case of ATF+4 and the 45RFE shift kit from APS. Will be doing a full flush and will see how this little shift kit helps with the sluggish shifting.

I can tell it's not a u-joint. It's to far forward like by the firewall area. Hey duelxt, actually my nick doesn't refer to Florida but to the cheap little cigars I used to be hooked on. I quit them a few years ago but still hanging onto the nickname. I got my shiftkit in today from ASP. A bunch of springs and metal parts but no instructions. I've done Chevy shift kits in the past but not without instructions.

My 01 has been making the same noise since day one! The dealer said it's normal...what ever that is. My wife freaks out cause she'll drive the truck once in a while and always tells me about the "zipper sound" like it's new!!
