Purge Valve
I have done a lot of reading on the purge valve and what its function is. My question is can the purge valve, being installed upside down (yes it was upside down causing the vacuum lines to become backwards) cause the CEL p0441? Also could this being installed incorrectly cause any damage to the motor? I have had the truck for just under 5 years and its been trowing the same code for most of the time I have owned it.
Is it possible this could be the reason that my motor would shut off very rough? I would shut the ignition off and the motor would try and continue cranking shaking the whole truck, it would also make a very loud knocking sound. This doesnt happen very often, I dont know how to reproduce it. It is just something that the truck decides to do whenever it wants. On a side note, since I have reinstalled it correctly I have noticed a gain in HP and overall smoother ride.

I had P0441 come up on my truck after I got it back from the body shop after I was in a wreck in March. I found a split emissions hose at the green test port under the hood, so I cut off the damaged hose end and put it back on the port. Two days later the code came back on. I checked all the emissions hoses under the hood and under my truck at the fuel tank and evap canister. Everything looked OK there so I tried a new gas cap and the code came back on 2 days later.
Then I researched and thought about the evaporative emissions system. When the wreck happened, the at-fault driver hit my truck in the left front corner of the bumper and hood area. He hit me hard enough to break my battery tray. The body shop had replaced the battery tray, but not the evaporative emissions leak detection pump (LDP) that is mounted on the bottom back side of the battery tray. I reasoned that if I was hit hard enough to break the battery tray then it probably broke the LDP too. A new LDP costs $130.00 at the dealer and is a dealer part only, Napa and other parts stores don't carry it. I didn't want to spend 130 bucks and have it not fix the problem, so I got a used LDP from a "Cash For Clunkers" truck at a local junk yard for $20.00. I also bought 8 feet of rubber fuel hose from Advance and replaced all the emissions hoses under the hood, plus I got new right-angled hose connectors for the purge solenoid. I installed the used LDP and replaced all but one of the evap emissions hoses under the hood. The only one I didn't replace was a larger diameter formed hose that you have to get at the dealer. Then I did a hard reset on my PCM.
That was in the first week in April and the code has not come back on since. I read that there are about 8 or 9 different causes for P0441 but if there are no obvious problems with the emissions hoses, 9 times out of 10 the problem will be a bad LDP.
I doubt your upside down purge valve has anything to do with the rough shut off and run-on condition in your truck. I don't know much about 4 cylinder Dakota engines but if you have an Idle Air Control Valve it might help to clean it. If you have an IAC it will be mounted to the back side of the throttle body. Remove it and clean the pintle end with a shop rag soaked in carb cleaner. Handle it gently and don't drop it or you will need a new one. You just want to clean the black crusty crud off the end of it. Clean the IAC orifice in the throttle body too and lube the O-ring with a little clean motor oil when you reinstall the IAC valve.
I know my 3.9 is very picky about the IAC being in good shape. It may be that yours is too.
