Default Power Window Problem (or worse)

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum but it looks like a good one : )

I love my quad cab Dakota but I'm having a problems with the electrical system recently.

Problem: passenger-rear window will not roll up. It will continue to roll down normally but not up.

Possibly related:
- none of the power windows work (up or down) unless operated from the driver's door. It seems to function just like the "child lock" feature, but this isn't the problem since I've tried the switch in both positions. This has been happening off and on for months but since I'm usually the only person in the truck I haven't been in a hurry to spend money on fixing it.
- the passenger-front window still rolls up and down but is sluggish and sometimes requires multiple attempts.
- the same thing happened several months ago and the next day it rolled up fine. I haven't used the window since until this week, and now it's stuck half-down.

So what does everyone think? Bad window lift motor (regulator)? Bad driver's switch? Faulty wiring harness?

Thank you to everyone who read this far, and thanks even more if you have a possible solution.

Sounds like a bad ground or just bad wiring. I can move this to the correct sub-forum where you can get better help. Just need you to post up your year.

Sorry Crazy4x4, I thought this was a generic enough question to qualify for the bigger forum. My truck is a 2002 Dakota. Thank you!

Hi, welcome to the forums.

I don't have 2002 schematics but in 2001, everything runs through the drivers door switch. It is most likely in the module.

It uses the same wiring to go up and down at each door, the module just reverses the polarity. If you feel like it, pop the door panel, disconnect the connector at the motor, and check voltages each direction.

All the windows use a common feed and ground, so that seems unlikely.

I'm thinking module as one problem. You can try to "assist" the window "up" if you want using your hand flat on the glass. Maybe it needs lubrication.

Hope it helps.

Thank you Crazy and 00DakDan for your inputs,

This morning I went out to my truck and gave the driver's door a few good whacks immediately adjacent to window controls (inside, against the glossy plastic and not the electronics). And voila! The window rolled up completely fine like nothing was ever wrong.

Any idea what this means? I'm now afraid to "test" it again by rolling it down out of fear that I won't be so lucky next time.

Dan, regarding assisting the window, I tried this already with my wife pushing the driver's side switch while I tried to lift the glass on the opposite end of the car and it didn't help. It seemed like it was electrical, but I assumed a broken lift motor was also possible at the time.

Do you think it is the module in the driver's door? Wiring harness somewhere?

I would jump at a faulty child lock switch seeing as it acts like that. But ground is always the best place to start when it comes to electrical. Just my two cents though.

I'm still thinking switch module. The book is pretty clear, they all share the same ground so if one door is having trouble, they all should.

I don't think you can replace the switches individually in the drivers door, I think its all or nothing, including the "child lock out."

If you want to test the window motors, disconnect the drivers door module. Hopefully these colors are the same:

Brown with a white tracer AND Violet with a white tracer are the Passenger Front door.
Red with a black tracer AND Dark Blue with a white tracer are the Left Rear door.
Dark Green with a white tracer AND Gray with a black tracer are the Right Rear door.
White AND Light Blue are the Driver Front door.

Connect 12 volts across each. One way makes the window go up, swap the wires, and the window will go down.

I'd check a boneyard for the switch.

happens a lot. replace the driver side window control. that module has everything running through it and that is were your problem is.

You can jump the brown and yellow wires to bypass the window lockout. Mine does this and I am pretty sure that's what it is.

Anyone know where the module is located?
