Default Gear change for better mpg's?

I have an 04 2wd 3.7 auto SXT. I have no idea what gear ratio the truck has, but I was wondering if anybody has ever swapped for bigger gears in a similar truck for better fuel mileage. My truck is not going to be used for towing or heavy hauling. It would be nice to get similar mpg's as a 6 cyl car while still having a pick-up. Is this possible?

not possible. if you rreally wanted better mpg youi would have to down grade the re gears to whatever less than 3.55 is. i think the 4cyl came with like a 3.27 or something its in the manual but not worth it.

Thanks for the info Thunder. Just curious though......why is it that a 6 cyl car typically gets much better gas mileage than a 6 cyl 2wd truck? Im assuming it's related to gearing, no?

probably weight too. cars are made for higher mpgs, aerodynamics, you have much heavier tires than most cars. the list goes on.

Your truck prob has 3:55's you can look in the glove box and it will tell you and a truck and a car are way different your truck is more heavy duty than a car will ever be.

That's true, I didn't really think of that. I love my truck, I wouldn't trade it for a car.....I just wish it got better mileage. I'm still waiting for the light deisel truck market to open in the U.S.

Agree on this one, For regular driving: Most you would gain 2 to3 mpg. You can do this with no gear change. Replace tail gate with non air drag one, or drop gate. Increase tire pressure a couple lbs. Use tires specified on door for your truck. lol big one your foot is for walkin not crushing the carpet under the gas pedal. Now for off roading, gas gears tires etc dont matter getin up the rocks, crestin the hill gettin thru the mud is whats important!LOL
