Default transfer case blew up

Hi guys, new forum user here. i've been a dodge fan since before i got my license, and finally got a 97 dodge dakota extended cab automatic tranny with the 5.2l v8 and 4wd. love that thing, baby it to the point of craziness. out of nowhere while driving down the highway at 70mph i hear a grinding and slow down to pull over and check problems, before i could pull over i hear a BOOM and get under my truck to find a waterfall of fluid and my transfer case split IN HALF!. i've heard this year truck had problems with overdrive locking up, but i've also never heard of the transfer case blowing in half either.
so since this truck is in near perfect condition i would love to fix this thing because its the best truck ive ever owned. my question is...is it smart to fix this problem for about 2700 bucks? i have found a possible deal to get a 50K mile tranny and transfer case for 1700 bucks with a great warranty, and a shop to do semi-cheap but quality work. i would love to do this job myself, but after putting a tranny in my old truck without the correct tools, i would rather have a shop do it.

any advice and places to check for parts would be appreciated thanks!

were you in 4wd at the time? why do you need a new tranny too?

t-cases are easy to install. just need a few wrenches.

Yeah I would probably check out the junkyard, thats the cheapest route usually. Most of them (or ones by me) you have to pull the part yourself but its definately worth it.

I hope he wasn't going 70 in 4 wheel drive. I doubt our transfer cases can handle that.

Hi guys. Well two mechanics told me overdrive locked up in the tranny. I know right now the only thing holding it stationary is a block and the parking brake. But I am still debating whether or not the tranny is messed up. And I live in southeast Kansas lol. I got a transfer case offer for 661.50 total and a 5 year unlimited mile warranty. But don't want to buy it if the tranny is also gone. Any ideas how to check it?

Where are you in SE Kansas? I grew up in Columbus. There are a few places over in Joplin that used to sell parts pretty cheap, but then again that was about 10 years ago too.
