Changed spark plugs, lost mileage
Changed from Bosch+2 spark plugs to OEM Champions. Lost 1 to 1.5 mpg, gapped @ .040, thoughts anyone? Didn't think I would lose mileage, from 13-14 to 12. Change the gap? Thoughts everyone?
Thanks.
Thanks.
"Bosch+2" are platinum plugs, right? They advertise better gas mileage:
So maybe you proved their claim correct.
The idea, if I remember correctly, is that platinum plugs require less arc-over voltage to fire than conventional plugs, so they end up firing a higher percentage of the time in a relatively weak (i.e., stock) ignition system, which will increase power and fuel economy a bit.
For example, in a stock ignition system, a conventional set of plugs may fire an average of 80% of the time. With plugs that require less arc-over voltage, they may fire an average of 85% of the time in the same ignition system. However, with a stronger ignition system, you might be able to get conventional plugs to fire an average of 90% of the time, which would be better than the platinum plugs in the weaker ignition system.
Don't quote me on any of that. It is just based on what I vaguely remember reading in a Mopar Action magazine some 15 years ago.
Bosch Platinum+2 Spark Plugs
More platinum in the center electrode with two yttrium-enhanced ground electrodes and a more powerful spark.
If you require smoother acceleration, better gas mileage, and optimum engine performance, Platinum+2 is the spark plug for you.

Interesting MaxinRecoil. They are platnium, but everyone was saying how the Daks don't like them, I thought maybe that was part of my mpg problem. So far apparently not. Will keep the Champions in for a while and see what happens.
Thanks everyone.
Thanks everyone.
I know I tried several plugs before deceiding what i was going to run in my truck on a constant the bosch++2 being one of them and I got worse gas mileage than i did with the autolite 3923's.
