Dodge Dakota will not run after transmission fluid changed.
#41
I have had this same thing happen to me and it took a week to figure it out.
What the dodge dealership here told me to do is that the transmission lost its prime due to the paper filter not sealing right. I did the same thing you did, I did not get the seal on flat with the paper filter.
The solution to this is to take the transmission pan down again and take off the spin on filter (the one that looks like a engine oil filter) and soak it in your transmission fluid in a pan to prime that filter and your problem will be solved. Your transmission is sucking air and not fluid and thats why it will not move.
I did the same thing and thought my transmission was gone too.
Trust me everything will be fine if you just prime the spin on filter which actually is the filter for the transmission cooler, sucking air and not fluid.
hope I have helped you out, keep me updated and maybe you can help me with my latest problem with my 04 dodge dakota truck.

Finally got a ODB scanner today. CarMD, which brings me to attention again, I think.
Got codes P0731, P1732, P1734, P1784
These codes are not in the Service Manual I downloaded, so I looked on the internet:
td p { margin-bottom: 0in; }p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } P0731 – Incorrect 1st gear Ratio
Possible Causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Shift solenoids
- Transmission mechanical problems
- Transmission hydraulic control circuit
P1732 - 2-3 Shift Malfunction
Problem in Shift Control System:
P1734 -
P1784 -
Anyone know what P1734 or P1784 are. I can basically look at the first two and say it is because of lack of pressure, because of the AutoZone Filters, but I dont even know where to begin with the other two.

your transmission just lost its prime, what you really need to do is to fill the screw on filter with atf+4 and put it back on and make sure that the paper filter is sealed against the transmission good and your problem is solved, I have had this problem before and that is what your gonna have to do to fix it.
once you do this let it idle for a while and the transmission cooler will fill back up and yer problem solved.

Well, I picked up the filters today from the Dealership, dropped the pan, changed out the filters (yet again), primed the cylinder filter, put fluid back in. AND TRUCK IS WORKING AGAIN YAY!!!!
Thank you to all that helped. Although I still have a little problem, but that will be posted in a new thread.
Thanks

glad you got your truck up and running again to reset the codes I had to go to autozone and get the codes erased by a scanner.
what a royal pain to just change transmission fluid. I would never change my transmission fluid again. same thing happened to me and my truck was down for a week.
really picky transmission
drive your truck around for a while for transmission to relearn everything and get the codes erased by a scanner or leave the battery unhooked for 30 minutes or so with both positive and negative battery cables off.
hope I have helped out.

I have changed mine several times and never had this problem. Changed my daughters 2005 dakota tranny fluid also and never had a problem. A year after changing hers the filter went bad and sucked the media into the neck blocking the fluid flow. She had a new filter installed and no problems now.
