I need more ooooMPH
I have an '04 3.7L Quad Cab w/ about 45k miles on it, and it is...to say the least...sloooooooow. I get pretty decent gas mileage (around 18 mpg city/ 20-22 highway) and I'm happy about that...but I am looking for ways to get a few more HP. I installed an app on my phone (I know..I know...) that takes 1/4 mile times and 0-60, etc based on GPS. It seems to be remarkably accurate. The best 0-60 time I've gotten is around 10.1 seconds, 1/4 mile is usually around 17.5 seconds. I also tow my boat quite often, and a few more hp would really help with that also.
I didn't buy the truck to be a dragster, and purposely bought a V-6 for the extra mpg. But I wouldn't mind a few more hp.
These are the mods I have done so far:
ebay CAI
Dynomax SuperTurbo muffler
replaced plugs w/ autolites
I definately noticed a difference between stock and after these mods, I'm thinking I gained around 10 hp.
My question is this:
If I get rid of the clutch fan (my truck has a stock efan) AND add a new fastman TB, how much HP will I gain? Also, and equally as important, will these mods affect my MPG at all? Logic says they will help, since the engine will gain power and breathe easier, as well as rev more freely w/o the clutch fan.
Any ideas on gained HP and affect on MPG? I would be happy if mileage stayed the same and I gained 10-15 hp. I would be even happier if I gained 1-2 mpg and 20-25 hp
but I don't think that's realistic.

you could do a simple rear mount turbo system.. low boost could get you 40 hp easy.
example: this is a top notch setup for the hemi rams.

you can turbo anything, and for low boost it's enough power for the guys like you. you'll catch the bug for sure.

I'm not sure you read what I wrote. No V8 is going to give me the mileage I am getting now. Not even close.
I appreciate the turbo/ supercharger advice, but that would kill my MPG, and like I said I don't want or need a dragster.
My question was in regards to removing the clutch fan and adding a TB. Does anyone have any info in regards to that?

I think there is a thread on here somewhere about a guy using a taurus efan and Im pretty sure it worked. I'd do a search for that in the threads and if nothing else I'm sure someone will chime in soon enough. I do remember dodgeramguy talking about it, either having done it or planning on it.
So you want more horsepower without burning more fuel... Hrmm good luck with that.
I swapped in the V8 in my truck in 5 days only working on it from 5 p.m. till 10 p.m.
I say go that rout they still get decent mileage with the V8's due to being such a light truck.
Good luck

With your current mods, you should see a small gain in power from a fastman or hughes throttle body and removing the fan clutch, however, I dont think your going to get much better mileage than you already are. I am lucky to see 17 mpg on the highway out of my V6. Your looking in the right direction though. You might also want to look into a underdrive pulley set to free up a few extra ponies.
Well I took off the clutch fan today, I can definately notice a difference in how fast the engine revs. I might take it out tonight and do a few 1/4 pulls since it's noce and cool to see if I picked up a tenth or two. Like I said I'm not necessarily looking for better mileage, I get over 20 mpg highway and around 18 city, I'm satisfied with that. I don't know of many trucks that can haul around 4 people and a boat and get that kind of mileage.
Here is how I see it:
Stock the truck had 210 hp.
Cold air intake adds 5-10 hp, call it 7.5 for arguments sake.
Dynomax muffler adds 5-10 hp, call it 7.5
Removed clutch fan and put in new plugs (gives back) 5 hp.
All those together means about 20 hp, so now I should be at about 230. A larger throttle body might add another 10-15, which would put me in the 240-245 range, and none of these mods will cause my mileage to decrease. They all make the motor more efficient, which , in theory, would allow the truck to use less gas as long as I stay out of the throttle, and would help my towing ability.
I would be perfectly happy with 240 hp and 22 mpg highway, which I am getting now.
