Default Please Help Before I Take It To The Shop

my truck seems to have no overdrive after i drive it for about 5 minutes. for the first time i start it up for the day it'll shift into 4th (O/D) just fine and lock the TC. but after i drive for about 5 mins it'll kick back into third and will not go back into forth for the rest of the day unless i let the truck sit for like 6 hours at least (then itll go into O/D and kick back out after 5 mins). ive replaced the ECT sensor and the fluid and filter (with ATF+4). someone else has got to have had this problem. im so sick of trying things and spending unnecessary money so i'm probably gonna take it to my local tranny shop and have to spend quite a bit.

thanks

truck: 1999 dodge dakota 4x4 5.2L Sport Club Cab
Transmission: 44RE

I'm thinking speed sensor or O/D solenoid. When my overdrive kept going on and off I found a broken speed sensor wire and bad sensor.

at 100 kph (60 mph) im doing like 2500 RPMs the torque converter locks just fine cuz if i press the od off button itll lock the TC in 3rd and wen the OD does work itll lock the TC in 4th at 80 kph

Could be your transmission getting hot of it's that consistent, if our trans get to warm or even if they don't get warm enough they'll drop o/d

If a speed sensor is faulty the transmission will rely on the temp sensors to shift. Just something I experienced in the winter.

sonderegger did you check your PCM for codes?
