Default idk if i trust the dealers around me anymore

i called about having the ho cams im getting installed and had some really wierd answers that dont match up one guy told me that its illegal to swap out cams due to thats tampering with "smog" equipment i had to laugh the next repair shop told me that the only way to replace the cams would be to tear down the entire front of the engine so they can reset all the timing and they would replace all the chains and guides at that time and would be $700 + parts which i would buy but the most common price range is 400-450 for the people willing to do it

I never trust 'shops' any ways.. my dad tells me stories on how shops used to train their guys to take certain parts clean them and make them look all shiny and say they replaced it..

As well I know many times I've had this done to my grandmother.. always some part is messed up.. and replaced but never fixed anything when there was nothing wrong.. gullible people i presume. Poor granny

Well...looking at the 4.7L isn't exactly paradise. I'm sure for the most part they are trying to get out of it to save their asses when something breaks if they didn't do something right.

Yeah, I think most people don't really want to do the job. They will for the right price though. I wouldn't have bought HO cams unless I was going to do the swap myself. I don't trust most mechanics to work on my truck especially with something that important. If I screwed it up that's one thing, but if someone else does it's a different story... if you understand what I'm trying to say...

Illegal to replace cams that means that anything that boosted performance would be illegal lol. Surely there has to be someone that can help you or even a trust worthy garage. Talk around every town has at least one person that is great with working on vehicles.

I gave up on shops as soon as I was old enough to walk.

i've always liked doin my own work, as for shops just not wanting to touch the 4.7 thats understandable to me. I'll work on most anything from my 76' F100 with the 360FE big block to my 98' dakota with the 360 small block, but a 4.7l with dual overhead cams is foreign country to me. But you can only learn from tryin.

im sure i can do it it would just be a expensive mistake to learn on if it was to much it just with the directions it soundsover wealming so form what i gather these are the steps

remove coils and injectors and what not in the way
remove valve covers
wedge the chain tentioner
mark or zip tie the chain to the sproket to help prevent losing time and hold sprocket
unbolt cam sprocket
unbolt the cam caps and place in order
and at this time you can replace lash adjusters
replace cams should only fit one way with the tab on the sprocket
bolt down the cam and torque and bolt sprocket remove wedge
replace valve cover

is this the basicor is there more then that

set the cams to TDC before doing anything. you gotta remove the oil filler cap. the tentioner, loosten the PS pump. and the cam bearing caps need to be tighened in a special way. bla bla bla. theres a diy in the 3g section and a few tech articles online about it.
