speaker problems

Default speaker problems

yesterday i started having problems with the speakers in my 97. they worked fine about a few days ago when i last drove the truck but now there is no sound coming from any of the factory speakers. the speakers i installed under the back seat still work though. thinking it might have been the radio, i put the radio from my 03 in it and still have the same problem. i looked under the dash and didn't see any wiring unplugged or damaged. anybody have any ideas before i completely remove the dash from the truck and replace the dash harness?

edit- i replaced all radio related fuses to make sure that wasn't an issue but it didn't help

just my first thought, not sure if you have an infinity factory system or not but the amp may have takin a crap on you, iknow you checked the fuses, but did you look for an amp fuse. also, the amp is located in the pass kick panel. im not sure if the dakotas had the infinity systems in 97.

i had a older kenwood head unit but put in a jvc to try to solve the issue. i'm not sure if it came with the infinity setup or not. i'll have to check tomorrow. i did see a fuse labeled "AMP" on the side of the dash. i'll double check the fuses.

Rip it all out and replace with aftermarket thats what i did..

i'm not too worried about it. if i can fix it easily, fine. if not, oh well. it's a play toy anyway

i do have the infinity system. i located the amp and the fuses for it are good. how can i test the amp to see if it works. if my 03 has the amp, it's not in the same location. i've already checked

At the amp you can check the main B+ power wire, you can check the remote-on input wire and you can check the resistance of the ground wire. Your amp might only have a bad ground.

You can also unplug the wire harness at the amp and use a volt-ohm meter to test each speaker lead for shorts to ground. There are 4 separate speaker level inputs on the input plug for the amp, you can use a known test speaker to check that each speaker input form the radio is working. If you have B+ power, remote on voltage and a good clean ground for the amp, either you have a shorted speaker wire somewhere or the amp is toasted.

If the amp is bad, you could just remove it, reinstall your aftermarket deck, and connect the speaker inputs from the deck to the speaker output wires, and you can do that all at the amplifier location, without running any new wires, as long as there are no shorted speaker leads in the truck. If you want to keep the factory amp, it might need to be repaired. A good car audio shop could probably bench test and fix it for you but you will probably get just as good of sound with the amp removed and just running the aftermarket deck's power.

so according to the first link if i'm reading it right, the blue wire from the radio harness should connect to the green/red or green/ orange? would i also hook my remote on wire from my aftermarket amp with these?right now, my amp is hooked to the blue wire from the radio. the wiring adapter i'm using has a blue wire, but currently isn't connected. could this be the problem?

Your Kenwood or JVC deck should have a blue/white remote on wire. If you used a matching harness, the one that you wire up to your aftermarket deck so it plugs into the factory radio harness plugs then yes connect the blue/white on the deck to the solid blue wire on the mating harness. If you did not use the mating harness then connect the blue/white from the deck directly to the to the green/red or green/orange wire in the factory radio harness in the dash. I never could tell exactly what color that stripe is but that is the wire in the factory radio wire harness that triggers the turn-on circuit for the factory Infinity amplifier. If you have no voltage on that wire you will get no sound because the amp will not turn on.

Yes it OK to connect the remote on wire from your other amp and the Infinity amp remote on wire together to the remote on wire on the deck. I would wire in a relay for remote on if you ever have more than the two amps in the system though, the remote on wire from the deck only has about .3 to .5 amps of current and too many amps on one remote on wire can damage the output. The blue/white wire on any aftermarket deck is for turning on an amplifier. It has voltage present as long as the deck is turned on, no matter which source you use, radio, cd, Ipod, Aux input, etc. A solid blue wire on the deck is for the power antenna. It has voltage output only when the radio is on. It used to be cool back in the day to only have the power antenna up when the radio was on and have it come down when you played a CD or cassette. That solid blue wire was also intended to turn on amplified antennas like they used on a lot of German cars back in the day too.

The mating harness they sell at Best Buy and other stereo shops, Walmart, parts stores etc most of them use a solid blue wire on the pin to connect to the green/orange Infinity remote on wire. That confuses a lot of people. I guess it saves the harness manufacturer some money not to have to buy any blue/white wires when they can use solid blue for both functions.

that helps a lot. it's my first vehicle with a factory amp so i was unsure how it was wired in. i'm going to hook it up now so i can make sure it works
