Could be several things, low freon, if your Electric fan doesnt kick in to pull air through the condenser, dirty clogged or damaged condenser fins. When stopped and the a/c on the efan should kick on after a few minutes. Also you should be able to tell when the a/c compressor clutch kicks in cause the rpms will fluctuate while the engine comes under load.

Default 97 AC Problem

I do not have a electric fan on 97 dakota and the ac compressor is kicking in and out. Looked in owners manual and the 3.9L does not list e-fan, it shows that the 2.5L does. The condencer is clean. Thanks for your help i guess it must be the dryer or the compressor going bad, after running for a while the compressor does start to make a noise but it is still kicking in and out.
Thanks

Every thing i have on the engine is running on the one belt. Do you know how the AC hoses disconnect from from the dryer, it is a strange looking clamps there but i think i read someware that there are o-rings in the connector ,i guess that you need a special tool to remove them.. I will call a Dodge service dept. and ask if it came with an electric fan. There is plenty of room for a e-fan.
Thanks

Hey man.. I have a 97 as well with the same sort of problem.. its the Fan Clutch.. its not engaging.. watch your temp gauge.. if your in hot heavy traffic and start idling you will notice it climb up a bit.. another indication of a bad fan clutch..

Other than that.. if your compressor is turning on and off- which it sounds like it is.. .

check freon levels.. make sure they are correct
-replace fan clutch.
